Hey there!
Since this is my very first post about my absolute favorite bed and breakfast in the whole world :-), I think it is only appropriate that I introduce myself.
My name is Gianni Malerba, I am 60 years old and have had a long career in hotel management in multiple countries in Europe and the Middle East. Opening new five star hotels and resorts has been my passion, I have dedicated over 25 years of my career to the hospitality industry and do not regret one moment of it.
Seeing that we have moved our family to Belgium, it was high time for me to start my own project: opening a bed and breakfast. What better place to do this than in Tongeren, the oldest city of Belgium! We purchased a property, started renovations and here we are… ready to open the doors of our bed and breakfast!
The Birth of Lazy Olives
Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Lazy Olives? What kind of name is that?” Well, let me tell you a little story. Picture this: me, standing in the middle of what would become our beautiful B&B, surrounded by dust and renovation chaos, when suddenly, a crate of olives I ordered for our welcome baskets comes crashing down. As I watched those little green orbs rolling lazily across the floor, it hit me – Lazy Olives! It was perfect, just like those moments when you’re on vacation, feeling utterly relaxed and, well, a little lazy.

Tongeren: Belgium's Hidden Gem
What Makes Us Us
Tongeren isn’t just Belgium’s oldest city; it’s a treasure trove of history, culture, and charm. And let me tell you, getting lost in these ancient streets is half the fun! I remember my first week here, I set out to buy some bread and ended up on an hour long historical adventure. Who knew getting lost could be so deliciously educational?
Tongeren is a walker’s paradise, with so much to see within strolling distance. And for those feeling a bit more adventurous, let me share some of my favorite day trip disasters turned delightful discoveries: Things To Do in Tongeren
We have created 4 discovery routes of the region Limburg for you that are ideal to do on a scooter or by bike: Limburg Day trips
Our property is located just off the city center, once you arrive, you will not need your car any more and can do everything by walking or by bike or scooter. For those arriving by motorcycle, we will ensure to secure your bike at night.
At Lazy Olives, we’ve mastered the art of blending modern comfort with simplicity and charm. It’s definitely a homely atmosphere we have here, with nice breakfast options and memory foam mattresses. I love old olive trees, so we planted 3 in our front garden, together with a large fig tree that yields us plenty of lovely figs every September.
Being Italian, you can imagine that food is important to me! Every morning, you will find me in the kitchen preparing breakfast. I take great care in serving you fresh croissants, rolls and charcuterie, fresh juice and your favorite coffee’s and teas. One can never have enough coffee in the morning!
Several dishes are made on the spot such as the wraps: for the sweet lovers there is the Peanut Butter and Banana breakfast wrap and for the savory lovers I would suggest the spinach and feta breakfast wrap. Besides that we serve bacon and eggs, French toast and Mini Croques.

Group Getaways
Lazy Olives is ideal for family reunions, friend gatherings, or any group of up to 14 people who want to stay together. Each room is comfortable, with a subtle nod to our namesake. We have 4 double rooms, one triple room and one family room for 4 persons. All together, a group of 14 can sleep here. Our rooms are named after cities I personally love in Sicily, the country where I was born. Sicily is never far away here, you can find it in multiple details we have around the property.
Seasonal Specials and Discounts
Let’s talk about our off-season deals. As someone who’s tried (and failed) to predict Belgian weather, I can tell you that every season here has its charm. And our prices during the quieter months? They’re as delightful as finding an unexpected chocolate in your dessert.
We will post seasonal discounts here on our blog so do stay tuned.
In Conclusion
Running BnB Lazy Olives in Tongeren is more than just a business; it’s a love letter to this beautiful city and to the joy of travel. It’s about creating a space where memories are made, laughter is shared, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll discover a new appreciation for olives.
So, whether you’re a history buff, a food lover, or just someone in need of a good laugh and a cozy bed, Lazy Olives is waiting for you. Come for the comfort, stay for the stories, and leave with a heart full of memories (and maybe a few olive recipes). Remember, life is short, but vacations can be lazy. See you soon at Lazy Olives!
